The Big Sleep

(Wesleyan-July 5, 2011)
Bogey proved himself a star in this film–able to carry a near incomprehensible plot with charm and humor.
Surprisingly, this Howard Hawks noir is about as close as Hawks ever would stay to the source material. This is surprising because novelist Raymond Chandler (who wrote the novel “The Big Sleep”) famously said he had no idea who did what to whom.
Yet a classic was still made, with sizzling performances, crackling dialogue. It is a night at the movies you will never forget; even if it consists of a plot you will never remember.
